Question by : Lingual Frenectomy (“Tongue Tie Surgery”)?
I am scheduled to have a lingual frenectomy in about a week (the frenum under my tongue will be removed). If anyone has had this surgery–I am not scared as much for the actual procedure as I am for the healing process. I start school 8 days after the procedure–is this enough healing time? Will I have pain or speech problems? Thanks

I haven’t had the surgery done but I need to because my frenulum is way too short, so probably I’ll schedule it after I get my braces off.

My dentist and some online research gave me useful information on this. As for your questions:
It’s great that you are not afraid of the procedure. It’s a minor thing and it’s done in a few minutes.

As for the healing process: there won’t be any complications apart from the normal ones (redness, itchiness, medium pain, low fever etc.) but there might be muscle pain when moving your tongue because your tongue will be eventually free and tongue muscles that were never used are now moving.

I think a week is the shortest period of a healing process, the big work will be done (the open wound will close, the stitches might be dissolved in half) and you’ll need proabably a month or so for a full recovery. But don’t worry, you won’t have a lot of problems at school talking and… eating ;)

Good luck.

Question by Bn: Why would a patient not be a good candidate for heart bypass surgery and already have two stents placed?
My father-in-law is 58yrs old and used to be a heavy smoker. They have put in two stents and wanted to do bypass surgery. But they told him they have done all they could for him and he was not a good candidate for surgery. What are his chances of survival and why would he not be able to have the surgery?

No one can predict his chances without knowing all the facts of his case. He would be a poor candidate for surgery if he has any preexisting conditions that cause his overall health to be poor or fragile. Without knowing more, its anybody’s guess. Ask his doctor to explain further. That’s what the doctor is there for. Don’t just take his word for it; ask questions.

Question by mathaowny: Why do some church leaders outright *lie* about why they dislike piercings and tattoos?
Many church leaders are lying about tattos and piercings– why can’t they simply say “It’s against our religion, we believe God doen’t like it and the Bible preaches against it” instead of saying:

–”It’s exulting in being ugly.” Just because someone’s tattoo is ugly to you doesn’t mean it’s ugly ot them– they probably think it’s beautiful, which makes this a moot point.
–”Tattoos and piercings are, at best, self-inflicted abuse.” Anyone who has taken a psyche class knows that this is a lie. There is no “self-abuse” involved any more than there is with plastic surgery.
–”Tattoos and piercings are only to shock and repel others, a sign of perverted values.” Um, I have my piercings for me, they have nothing to do with anyone else. Also a moot point.
–”Piercings are a sign of sexual disorientation.” Again, take a psyche class and you’ll know this is false. Piercings don’t affect your sexuality.

Why can’t these people tell the truth instead of lying and making us look bad?
It’s fine with me if you and your church don’t agree with people getting tattoos and piercings. That’s your right to disagree, and I understand that many Bibles are against it– that’s fine with me.

I just think it’s wrong that people are lying about others and making them look bad instead of telling the truth that it’s simply against their religion. They’re purposely making tattooed, pierced, and other groups of people look bad when the could instead tell the truth and leave it at that.
Not to mention, it’s fine that you don’t want any tattoos or piercings, but outlawing them for everyone because of your personal beliefs is also wrong: “Employers and principals should make rules outlawing any such jewelry for male staff and students. Especially for the young, such rules protect them both from themselves and from peer pressure.”

I don’t know about that but it is annoying how judgmental people are of other’s tattoos.

A transman is a transsexual who was born female and is transitioning to male. Bottom surgery is any one of several sex reassignment surgeries on the genitals.
